There are some amazing artists coming to Stockholm at the end of May, and I'm luck to go with them! If you want to come go to and use the promo code NIELSON (before Feb 15!) for discounted tickets.
I'm teaching workshops on rendering light with Schoolism along with a group of amazing artists this Spring. If you're interested in either one, there are links to each on the front page of Schoolism's website. There's a discount for my followers, enter "NIELSON" when asked for a promo code!

The premium classes are the number one reason why I love to work with Schoolism. My development as an artist I owe almost completely to the great critiques I've gotten over the years from great artists.

This is the only time Schoolism has ever done a sale on the critiqued classes, and the sale will be over in less than a week. Go to to find out more (I teach two classes there, but there are a lot of other great classes you should look into!)

This is a short clip from a 20-minute bonus feature I just added to one of the lessons in my "Fundamentals of Light" class at Schoolism.
There are a whole bunch of Schoolism subscriptions available now (I teach two classes there, but there are many other amazing teachers to check out!). There are a limited number of spots and last time they sold out really fast---in just a few days, I think. So don't delay if you're interested! is where you go to sign up.
There's a video on Game Informer talking about the process of designing toys for Disney Infinity:…

You'll also see all my (ex)team at Avalanche, and some not-yet-released concept art I did. It's pretty interesting, definitely worth the watch!
Hey everyone, I always feel strange putting this sort of thing in my journal, but I don't know where else to go.
There's some awesome news: Schoolism is trying to move to an inexpensive subscription service for the self-taught classes. There's a kickstarter telling more about it (and giving you a chance to sign up for a subscription) here:…

In order to help spread the word, I'm going to give away one of the spots in my full critiqued classes for free. They normally cost $1000, so if you've been wanting to take a critiqued class but haven't had the money, here's your chance. Signing up to win is simple: go HERE and share and like the post. That's it! I'll pick a winner out of the list facebook generates of shares/likes.
I wrote some thoughts on this after using it for a month. Check it out on my blog:…
WHAT. Now Claire Wendling and Craig Mullins will be there too.…
Good news for those of you considering or planning to go to the Schoolism workshop in Toronto. They just added a surprise guest: the amazing Claire Wendling. If you live in the area, don't miss this one! And yes, they did misspell my name on this. It's the curse of being a Nielson.

If you live close enough to attend or are swinging my Toronto in March, this workshop is shaping up to be pretty incredible.  Brenda Chapman, Kevin Lima, Stephen Silver, and Helen Chen will be teaching some amazing things, so I think the all-access is definitely the way to go! And the good news is, since I'm presenting at it also, I get to hand out promo codes to my followers for a discount. The pass is normally $200 CAD and this allows you to get one for $150.

Here's the promo code to type in for the discount: NIELSON

Here's the link to purchase tickets:…

Don't worry, I still plan to post stuff here on DA, but I know some people prefer other sources for their day-to-day tracking of artwork.

I have an instagram now, mostly here I'll be posting sketches and progress shots.

I don't have a facebook like page, but I changed the settings so you can follow my posts without adding me as a friend.

And of course, I'm still posting regularly on my blog.

Next stop: Artstation? I haven't decided which of the CGHUB clones to join.
I've been so busy with projects recently that I keep forgetting to post this. I'll be teaching a workshop along with some legendary artists, in Vancouver in January. I'll be melding some of the stuff from my Schoolism classes together and adding some new things I've been learning into a workshop on how light can be used to tell story. Of course my demo will be painting, but the ideas will apply to any discipline that fuses value, color, and composition. I can promise that the other artists will make it worth coming, and I'll do my best to add something useful to the mix. My guess is that tickets will sell fast, so don't wait too long to sign up if you plan on coming.
I almost forgot to post this and the last date is approaching fast. My apologies to the few of you who were asking when there would be a sale again.
I'm now teaching a second class at Schoolism. The first class is on painting accurate light and surface, where this one is about using those principles to paint more appealing and expressive lighting. Personally, I've had a lot more fun developing this class, and I honestly think it's going to be even better than the first. :)

The first class isn't technically a pre-requisite, but if you want to jump straight into this one without taking the other, you should have a solid understanding of these things:
-how different sizes of light fall over a variety of surfaces; eg. matte, shiny, translucent, etc.
-how light and surface color interact
-how different sizes and positions of light cast shadows
-how to control lighting exposure
-a good understanding of how light is scattered through atmospheric effects

My class and the others from the talented teachers at Schoolism are on sale for a short bit. Also, they used my art on the flyer!

I've been asked to contribute to this book, and it is going to be amazing (perhaps in spite of me, but hey, you take what you get).
And I'm really sorry because there have been people asking me when the next sale would be. There is still time though if you get in before the 18th.

I've got a tutorial coming out in the latest Digital Art Masters Book. Check it out!
