Grandpa's Stories by Artsammich
Grandpa's Stories
Another demonstration for my character design class.
Monstare by Artsammich
I just realized that in my crazy schedule the last month, I never took the time to announce officially my change in jobs. I decided to leave Disney and teach at BYU full-time. This semester they have me teaching digital painting for animation, character design, and gesture drawing. BYU has a great animation program and the students are very talented so I'm excited to see what kinds of things we can do there.

I have no idea if the students are getting anything out of my character design class but at least I've been having fun doing the assignments with them. This assignment was to design a monster that was both scary and had a personality. This idea was based on the criteria we had on an unreleased project I worked on at Disney/Avalanche several years back.
I almost forgot to post this and the last date is approaching fast. My apologies to the few of you who were asking when there would be a sale again.
I'm now teaching a second class at Schoolism. The first class is on painting accurate light and surface, where this one is about using those principles to paint more appealing and expressive lighting. Personally, I've had a lot more fun developing this class, and I honestly think it's going to be even better than the first. :)

The first class isn't technically a pre-requisite, but if you want to jump straight into this one without taking the other, you should have a solid understanding of these things:
-how different sizes of light fall over a variety of surfaces; eg. matte, shiny, translucent, etc.
-how light and surface color interact
-how different sizes and positions of light cast shadows
-how to control lighting exposure
-a good understanding of how light is scattered through atmospheric effects

I've been creating a lot of new pieces for my Lighting for Concept and Story class at Did this one for an example on surface design.

I just started Fundamentals of Lighting.

What a fantastic course! I knew it would be great, but it has already exceeded my super high expectations in the first week.

I considered the free vids from the BYU course to be the most important things I've learned about light and painting. No other artist approaches things from such a scientific method.

Super excited to be learning from one of my absolute favorites!

Thank you Sean! I'm glad to hear that it's been helpful.

It's beyond helpful.
In the first week 3 of my biggest questions have already been answered and I have gained back SO much confidence.

It has already changed my process of painting. I can't wait to see the rest.

did you invent the ambient occlusion method of painting?
Artsammich Featured By Owner Aug 28, 2014
I don't remember seeing another artist using it the way that I do before I did, but I can't really take credit for it either because I stole it wholesale from the class I had on 3d compositing and render passes.

that means you probably invented it (for 2d). A clever adaptation of a 3d technique.
